Job Overview

Drafts/reviews contracts between NYRA and general contractors to support and facilitate business transactions while minimizing business risk.  Focus on litigation and pre-litigation issues including monitoring the activities of any lawyers hired to represent NYRA in various legal proceedings.

Responsibilities

Drafts contracts between NYRA and general contractors to support and facilitate business transactions such as purchases of materials and services while minimizing business risk. This involves:

  • Defining specifications and prepare contracts that address insurance requirements, indemnification clauses, timing issues, and other terms of the agreement.
  • Negotiating contracts with the vendors’ representatives to arrive at a mutually acceptable agreement.
  • Amending contracts as required to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • While working with commercial construction matters, attempting to eliminate or minimize damage claims.
  • Monitoring the activities of external lawyers to represent NYRA in various legal proceedings and actions relative to the construction process and general litigation.  Assists in the selection of external lawyers and the defense of NYRA.
  • Participate as needed in drafting proposals (RFP) for the purchase of goods and/or services.
  • May perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education:    Law Degree. Licensed to practice law in the State of New York

 

Experience:

  • 5 to 10 years of litigation experience
  • Varied experience as a commercial litigator
  • Significant experience handling construction litigation cases and/or experience litigating against general contractors and construction companies.
  • Experience with construction liability and professional liability cases involving design professionals (e.g., architects & engineers).
  • Experience handling commercial construction matters (e.g. contract analysis, delay damage claims).
  • Excellent editing, legal research, analysis and writing skills
  • Ability to complete assigned projects by prescribed deadlines.
  • Organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented and able to manage tasks effectively
