Job Overview

Reporting to the Director of Security, the Captain will manage, plan, direct, supervise and evaluate the activities of NYRA’s uniformed security force,in order to protect NYRA assets and the security of NYRA personnel. In addition, the Captain will direct and control all security related issues related to any serious incident, accident or arrest.



  • Operations Responsibilities:


    • Patrol areas of NYRA facilities on a scheduled basis to observe and report any unlawful or unsafe activities;
    • Monitor security camera images;
    • Monitor the use and maintenance of all equipment issued to uniform officers;
    • Respond to reports of any disruptive or criminal activity;
    • Assist law enforcement in securing the crime scene and any physical evidence;
    • Interview witnesses, collect and record information and other evidence;
    • Report individuals engaged in, or suspected of, criminal or unlawful behavior to local law enforcement;
    • Cooperate with law enforcement representatives as required;
    • Notify appropriate members of the Security Department of NYRA;
    • Conduct investigations of complaints against personnel in the Uniform force as directed;
    • Insure completeness of investigative detail, development of all possible leads, accuracy, clarity, and compliance with instructions.


  • Administrative Responsibilities:


    • Assist in the preparation of an annual operating budget; authorize overtime as required.  
    • Plan and assign work to ensure adequate coverage of all facilities;
    • Establish department objectives and plans to achieve them;
    • Evaluate staff performance; initiate corrective action as needed;
    • Arrange for new hire training in security operations;
    • Develop, recommend and implement improvements to existing operating policies and procedures;
    • Ensure compliance for all NYRA and department rules and regulations;
    • Ensure terms and conditions of collective bargaining are applied at all times;
    • Interviewing and hire new employees as needed.

  • Ensure all Uniform members under supervision are familiar with emergency plans for the track.









    • Minimum ten (10) years of administrative and operations supervisory experience of uniform law enforcement work force
    • 4-year college degree
    • Microsoft Office proficiency
    • Ability to establish positive and effective working relationships with external law enforcement agencies
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated decision-making, problem-solving, and de-conflicting skills
    • A champion for enhancing guests’ experience
    • Must be willing to work schedule that includes most weekends and holidays.
    • Working knowledge / experience within the horse racing industry preferred.
    • Incident Command System Training a plus (FEMA).
