  • Job Overview

    The Racing Communications Specialist independently creates, edits and issues press releases, statements, quotes, race advances, race recaps and other written, racing-themed communications.  As needed, the Racing Communications Specialist will also support the overall communication’s operation including board meetings, press conferences and non-racing, NYRA-themed events and initiatives.



    • Independently evaluates storylines and uses discretion to determine impact and value to NYRA.


    • Creates, edits and issues written, racing-themed communications, including:
      • Press releases
      • News notes
      • Quotes
      • Advances
      • Feature stories
      • Media Guide

    • Frequently visit the backstretch areas to meet with trainers and develop potential stories and story ideas. 


    • Obtains quotes from jockeys, trainers, and owners directly after stakes races.


    • Facilitates media coverage by assisting reporters with research, setting up interviews, troubleshooting broadcast media production details, escorting TV crews.

    • Independently develops stories beyond traditional racing media, and complete outreach to local media (weekly community papers and their websites, influential community focused websites, local broadcast outlets on NYRA initiatives and events.)


    Education (minimum): Bachelor’s Degree

    Experience:  4 years of relevant experience in a professional office environment, including at least 2 in a marketing, public relations or customer service role.  Must have superior writing skills, strong attention to detail and an in-depth knowledge of the thoroughbred racetrack industry.


    Other Requirements: Ability to work a racing schedule which includes weekend and holidays and to work on site at each live track (Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course). A travel stipend is provided to work in Saratoga.
